Life in Writing
This quote may seem a bit situational, and only applicable to the Star Wars world, but when viewed a little deeper, the application to our lives can be profound. You may not be a member of an actual rebellion, at least not the kind of rebellion Jyn is speaking of in this quote, but in sense we're all "rebelling" against something anytime we decide to make a change. Sure it sounds extreme to say that you're rebelling against junk food when you decide to go on a diet, but isn't that kind of what you're doing?
It's fitting that this is the final Nerd Wisdom post before the new year, as all of us are making our New Year's resolutions to "rebel" against our old ways. It's the time of year when we all find the motivation to fight against the tyrany of our own personal vices. When we stand up and say "no more" to the things that control us.
Every year millions of people declare that they will rebel, and change their lives. And then reality sets in. Rebellions aren't easy. How many countless millions of people have started a New Year's diet only to give up after three weeks because they decided that it was just too hard. Exercise is exhausting, and cheeseburgers are too delicious to go without. They lose their hope of succeeding. And as Jyn very aptly points out, "Rebellions are built on hope."
Without hope, every rebellion, every effort to make a change, will inevitably fail. But for the strong, for the true rebels who hold on to their hope of victory, winning is equally as inevitable. So as you focus on your New Year's resolutions this year, remember what Jyn Erso has to say on the matter, and never give up hope.
