Life in Writing
Today's piece of writing advice won't be coming from me, but instead I'll simply be directing you to a spectacular resource for writers. New York Times best selling author Brandon Sanderson, is just about the most qualified teacher you could find on writing fiction. If you haven't ever read any of his work, that's something you should fix soon. You can find a few of his best selling fantasy novels here, here, or here. Every year Brandon teaches a fiction writing class at Brigham Young University which I've had the good fortune to attend. But for those of you who weren't fortunate enough to attend a university where a best selling author happens to teach a class, you're in luck because this year he recorded the lecture portion of the class each week and is now posting it to Youtube. I've included the first lesson in this post; the rest of his lectures will be posted on Youtube during the coming weeks.
They take some time to watch but they're more than worth it. The best writing advice I can give is to take the chance to learn from a true master of the craft as often as possible.
Daniel M. Quilter is the author of A Soul Divided. On this blog he'll interview other authors, review books, share nerd wisdom from popular sci-fi and fantasy, and occasionally share his insights on writing. See a list of his works or see what he's working on.
